With the sixties the increasing expense of expert labor was making it ever more unprofitable to generate Winchester’s classic models, as they required appreciable hand-get the job done to finish. Particularly, Winchester’s flagship Design 12 pump shotgun and Product 70 bolt-action rifle with their machined forgings could no longer contend in selling price with Remington’s Forged-and-stamped 870 and seven-hundred. Accordingly S. K. Janson shaped a completely new Winchester structure team to advance the usage of “modern” engineering structure techniques and producing rules in gun layout.

I think about Winchester would of kept and taken care of the barrel chamber reamers for all the different 271+ calibers which they made. Along with a lot of barrel blanks laying all-around. This is from a 1916 brochure on the manufacturing unit’s goings-on.
